Kathy – Piano & Flute
Kathy has been teaching privately for over 45 years. The majority of her career was teaching elementary and high school music in Ohio and West Virginia public schools. She instructed flute at Muskingum University (OH) and flute and piano at West Liberty University (WV). She played flute professionally for 22 years with the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra (WV). Kathy holds a Bachelor of Music degree in music education (piano) from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and a Master of Music degree in flute performance from Duquesne University. Her flute teachers include Jack Wellbaum (Cincinnati), James Walker (Los Angeles) and Bernard Goldberg (Pittsburgh). She has an additional 45 hours of graduate work in gifted, music, and education courses. She worked as a mentor teacher in Ohio County Schools and instructor for the WV Center for Professional Development for 10 years. Kathy moved to Wake Forest in 2006 and served as Associate Minister of Music at North Raleigh United Methodist Church for 9 years where she accompanied two choirs, directed a senior choir, and directed two adult handbell ensembles. She has taught diverse classes from team building to handbell technique at the Handbell Musicians of America National Seminars and played bells at Distinctly Bronze East for ? years. Many of her students have been all-state participants, all-state accompanist, and scholarship music majors at universities. She enjoys teaching and individualizes lessons to encourage students to enjoy and love music.
